Reasons to visit Ronda and El Gastor
Tucked away in the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range, Ronda and El Gastor offer a taste of the real Andalucía just an hour's drive inland from Marbella and Estepona.
The area is famous for its pueblos blancos, timeless white-washed towns and villages dotted across the mountain landscape, each with their own unique history and character. While the town of Ronda is one of the largest, with over 33,000 population, El Gastor offers a more typical example, transcending time and epitomising the traditional Andalucían culture.
Reasons to visit the Ronda and El Gastor area are numerous. The still, cool mountain air of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park make it ideal for outdoor activities. Hike dusty waymarked trails in the steps of pilgrims, go caving and climbing, experience a range of waters sports on the Embalse de Zahara lake or enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in this rocky landscape. Local restaurants and tapas bars are never far away.
Ronda itself is packed with independent shops, churches, museums and an impressive Bull Ring, one of the largest and oldest in Spain. But the main attractions is undoubtedly the natural gorge, bridge and Visitor Centre. Crowds gather to gaze down at the River Guadalevin, now some 120 metres below the 260-year-old Puente Nueva (New Bridge). For those in search of a quieter retreat, the village of El Gastor has less than 2,000 residents but offers equally stunning surroundings.
